The Project

During this project you will be investigating 1 of 5-6 major industries around the world. Your task is to give the class an informational presentation based on the bulleted items on the Research tab backed with researched evidence. Your group is also to give your opinion on whether your industry should be included on Amnesty International's Humanitarian award list or should be included on their "watch-list."

Select one of the following industries as the focus of your investigation:

Clothing (garments), Farming (especially chocolate, coffee, & citris), Mining (especially diamonds and emeralds), Electronics (especially phones and computers), Fireworks, Sporting Equipment, Rugs/Tapestries

In your research, investigate the impact your industry has on the following: (Each person will be responsible for one bullet and the remaining bullets will be divided equally amongst all group members)

  • Location(s) of factories and where resource(s) used are coming from

  • Working conditions (Wages, hours, facilities, safety, benefits, etc.)

  • Labor/workers (Who involved? Ages, gender, ethnicity, etc.)

  • Culture traits (religion, form of government, laws/customs, standard of living, etc.) of countries that are source of resources and labor

  • Environmental impact (good/bad) of the industry practices

The group will create a Google presentation to share with the class. Each individual will be accountable for the following:

  • Research notes on graphic organizer

  • Minimum of 2 informational slides on selected focus area (from your bullet)

  • Sources slide (minimum of 3 sources cited, MLA format)

  • Group slide giving recommendation on whether your industry should be on the "award list" (reasons why) or on the "watch list" (reasons why)

Research Tip

Research is a process that takes time. Do a little bit each day to be successful. Your arguments will develop overtime as you learn about the issue.
